Today in the Writer Spotlight: Catori Sarmiento!

How old are you and where are you from?

I am thirty-two years old and am originally from Bremerton, Washington, which is a small town across the water from Seattle.

Tell us more about your book!

After the end of World War Two, American society is recuperating from the human loss of war, an uneven social system, and a massive corporation that has caused a technological boom. Seeing a new opportunity, Sarah Igarashi departs from her home on the coast of Alaska to meet her cousin in Seattle where she stumbles to find her place in a new city filled with otherworldly technologies and ideals. Soon, Sarah finds herself drawn to a socialist cause and endeavors to propagate social change, even at the cost of her personal safety.

In contrast is Penelope Morgan, an outwardly confident sixteen-year-old who is quite comfortable navigating through a rapidly changing society while also pursuing a singing career. She lives somewhat comfortable with the remainder of the Igarashi family due to inheriting her parent's home and wealth. In her vigor to become a singer, she has agreed to assist her cousin George, his wife Catherine, and his father in their clandestine business ventures, often serving as an information courier in exchange for nightclub gigs. As Penny becomes more entwined in the criminal actions of the family business, she must make the choice between helping Sarah or achieving her dream.

You’re sharing an elevator with a big name publisher. Pitch your book using 20 words or less!

The Fortune Follies Sarah Igarashi and Penelope Morgan as they struggle to pursue their dreams in a city of otherworldly technologies and ideals.

What does your ideal writing space look like?

My ideal writing space would be on a quiet train travelling a mountainous countryside.

If your book was turned into a movie, who would play your main characters?

Great question!

I think Sarah could be portrayed by Ririka Kawashima while Derek Mio would be perfect to capture George’s complicated personality. Penelope would be the most difficult to find an actress for, but I think a younger actress or singer like Emi Meyer would work.

You’re stranded on an island, and only one character from any book can save you. Who are you picking?

I would probably choose Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series since she is an altruistic character who has an extensive knowledge of magic and could disapparate us instantaneously.

Besides being a writer, what else do you enjoy?

I enjoy stranded knitting, hiking, and reading.

Do you have any upcoming book promotions?

I will have one next month, starting on October 15th.
