How old are you and where are you from?
I am 43 years old and live in Birmingham, where I am a consumer protection attorney, poet, and
novelist. I was a Parks Service brat as a kid and went to high school and college in Arkansas
Tell us more about your book!
The Legend of Colgan Toomey is about growing up in small town Alabama, and football, and the
Salvadoran Civil War and a serial killer in Texas, and lots of other things, but what it’s really about is how we never really know anyone!
You’re sharing an elevator with a big name publisher. Pitch your book using 20 words or less!
An in-depth study examining a complex character from numerous different perspectives. Its unique angle on storytelling will blow you away.
What does your ideal writing space look like?
I tend to be cluttered and have notes, usually on legal pads all over the place. I like it that way. I also like writing on a desktop rather than a laptop, and I love my dual monitor system.
If your book was turned into a movie, who would play your main characters?
The title character, Colgan Toomey, is 6-6 with long red hair. The description matters. As long as they meet that, I’m not sure it matters much who they pick for Colgan. PJ, Colgan’s best friend, would have to change over time, but I would pick Oliver Platt for grown up PJ and Melissa McCarthy for Kim. Then I’d love to see Jennifer Lawrence as Eliza. There are a lot of other characters, but those are the most important.
You’re stranded on an island, and only one character from any book can save you. Who are you picking?
Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings. I’m pretty sure he’d get me out of there ��.
Besides being a writer, what else do you enjoy?
I love reading and playing trivia, everything from pub trivia to Quizbowl, and I’ve been trying to get on Jeopardy! for years.
Do you have any upcoming book promotions?
I am doing a reading this Saturday, November 16, at the Pelham Public Library, in Pelham, Alabama.
