A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of doing a writing and arts workshop with the children of The Shade Tree during their back to school event. I introduced myself and shared a little bit about my writing and my platform. I supplied them with different art tools and showed them how to put together a DIY book. They had the option of writing a story, comic, or whatever their creative minds came up with. One little girl wrote a story about her love for her mother. Another young lady wrote a story about her lost dog. Some of the kids just wanted to express themselves through drawing which just as fun. This workshop wasn't just about books, but allowing children in less than desirable situations a safe space to express themselves. Giving them hope and encouragement to look forward to another day. I wanted them to know that the sky is the limit for them, whether or not they decide to pursue arts or writing in the future.
