Girls Inc., a non-profit organization was founded in 1864, to help women who were going through rough times in the aftermath of the civil war. Throughout the decades since then, Girls Inc. has adapted to the changing times, and progressed in becoming a haven and an outlet for young women to reach their full potential in the midst of oppression and poverty. They serve girls ages 6-18 at more than 1,400 sites in 400 cities across the United States and Canada. These girls form a strong bond of sisterhood, filled with self- confidence, and have the proper leadership and support to grow up healthy, educated, and independent women.
“Do not let disappointment discourage you. I was crushed when I did not get into my dream school, and I felt like giving up, but my community kept me going. Thanks to my incredible teachers, family, and friends, I regained my confidence and found another way to achieve my goal.” -Anya, a member of Girls Inc.
This young woman’s story, which can be read on the Girls Inc. website under “Impact Stories”, is an example of the positive influence this non-profit has had on girls from all over the country. People, environment, and research-based programming are the three elements used in guaranteeing a successful outcome for these girls. Girls who join this network are more likely to graduate from high school and college and remain on a positive path throughout their teenage years when getting involved at a younger age. The board of directors and staff work hard to deliver life changing results that will shape these girls into becoming the best version of themselves and reaching their full potential.
