Today in The Writer Spotlight: Franklin D. Brewer!

Tell me about yourself! How old are you, and where are you from?

Hi, I’m 33, born and raised in Columbus, OH, though most of my family hails from North Carolina and Georgia!

Give us a summary of your book!

The Art of Becoming is at its core a self-empowerment book. In it I provide practical tools and explanations of mindset shift and mindfulness practices. Anyone looking to reach their next level will benefit from the information presented.

What inspired you to write this book?

2020 was a year of immense personal growth for me and I encountered so many new ideas that made me reevaluate my life and its trajectory. As I learned to unlock more of my potential, I felt pulled to share the light that I uncovered and help others shine their light as well.

If you could pick one song to describe this book, what would it be?

I would say Good Morning Love by Common. In it, he describes his awakening to self-love, breaking generational curses, and redefining what is acceptable in his life moving forward.

Have you written any fiction novels as well? If not, would you and what genre?

I have not, though I have played with a few ideas. I would probably write a teen coming-of-age novel as I work with a lot of middle and high school students. Maybe a sci-fi action novel where the unassuming protagonist discovers some ancient hidden knowledge or power within himself.

What are two of your favorite books? Least favorite?

Two of my favorite books since childhood are Beach Music by Pat Conroy and The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling. My least favorite, most of the music history textbooks I read in school, lol. Also, The Odyssey by Homer. I was assigned that book both in high school and college, and both times, I relied on sparks notes, smh.

Do you have any other hobbies or businesses that you would like to share?

I am a musician, vocalist, and voice teacher/vocal coach with my own business, MusiXol Agency, LLC. As far as hobbies, I love to cook foods from other cultures.

How has the pandemic affected you professionally?

It forced me to reevaluate my relationship with the musical canon, as well as the techniques with which I taught musical clients. For most of my career, music was the pinnacle, that to be aspired to. During the pandemic, music was secondary to the emotional, mental, and even physical needs of my clients. On top of that, the need to be completely virtual challenged me to develop alternate ways to gain, assess, and develop said, clients.

Do you have any upcoming book specials/giveaways or events?

I am planning a small book release and book signing event in Columbus, OH in the Fall of 2021, date TBA.
