Today in The Writer Spotlight: Ashley "Ms. AyeVee" Vargas!
For those who don’t know, tell us a little about yourself! How old are you, where are you from, and where did you grow up? (Share a fun fact about your hometown!)
-I’m 34 and I was born and raised in Las Vegas.
When did you realize that you had a love for poetry, or writing in general?
-I started writing at a very young age, about 8 years old, in my diary. My love for words seems to have always existed in me.
Are there any Black icons that inspire you?
-I have always been a fan of Erykah Badu and her bravery to simply be herself.
Do you have any published or upcoming books?
-My first book of poems, “April Flowers” was self-published in 2019 & I recently curated and edited an anthology titled, “Beyond the Neon Anthology Vol. one” from Zeitgeist press.
If you could use any song or music artist to describe your poetry, what or who would it be?
-Oh man, that's a tough one. If I had to choose I would say Miles Davis.
What are some of your favorite poetry books? Fiction/ non-fiction books?
-I like so many different poetry books it's hard to choose one but my favorite non-fiction is, “As a Man thinketh” by James Allen
Do you have any other hobbies or businesses besides writing?
-I’ve been a massage therapist for 10 years and own my own wellness company, Realistic Wellness.
Has the pandemic challenged you professionally?
-I feel like the pandemic changed so many things about me, including professionally. I feel like I was able to take much needed time to re-evaluate what is most important in my life and what I was just doing as a routine.
What advice would you give young Black girls who dream of becoming writers?
-Be brave. There will be people who will try to discount your stories & experiences, tell your story anyway.
