In The Spotlight Today: Viki Doyle Heagy
How old are you and where are you from?
I am 59 years young. The rolling hills of western Pennsylvania are my home.
Tell us more about your book!
In Lucy Ladybug Becomes a Big Sister , Lucy’s parents adopt four new ladybug kids from Hawaii. Lucy is excited. She always wanted brothers and sisters. One of her friends questions the fact that the new ladybugs have different colored shells from her. She tells them that color doesn’t matter. Love does - and she has a lot of love to give them. The bugs are welcomed into the forest with a luau.

This children’s book is about color diversity. Children will learn that all colors are beautiful. Love is the bond.
What does your ideal writing space look like?
My ideal space is cozy and quaint. On my antique desk is a Victorian lamp, a vintage vase that doubles as a pencil holder, a stack of handwritten notes and my laptop. Two walls have floor to ceiling bookshelves and contain all my favorite books and family photos. A third wall has a fireplace with an overstuffed chair angled towards it. This gives me a place to relax and have a cup of tea. It also gives my dog a place to curl up and sleep while she keeps me company. The fourth has a large picture window that looks out over a field and woods. When I need to work out a twist in the plot, I can watch birds at the feeder or the deer as they venture out from the underbrush.
What do you find most fulfilling about writing books for children?
I enjoy hearing and seeing the reactions of the children as the encounter my characters. I believe reading to children is the best gift you can give them. Books open up a new world of adventure and knowledge. Stories should be fun and teach a lesson. I want my writing to make a difference in the lives of children. I hope that the characters in my books will inspire and motivate children as well as provide a springboard for parents and teachers to discuss issues facing children today.
Albert Einstein said, “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” This is so true.
You’re stranded on an island, and only one character from any book can save you. Who are you picking?
Harry Potter. His knowledge of magic will soon have us returned to home. Maybe he will even let me borrow his invisibility cloak when I want to write undisturbed.
Besides being a writer, what else do you enjoy?
I love to travel. My husband and I are slowly checking off destinations on our bucket list. When at home, I read, sew, paint, garden and spend time with my family - especially my granddaughters!
