In The Spotlight Today: Aliada Duncan!

Tell us, How old are you, and where are you from?

A. First off, I’d like to say that I am a mother, writer, and child of the Most High. I am 27 years old. I hail from Furman, South Carolina. I am a woman behind my words. Since the age of thirteen, I have been fond of the infinite possibilities of the craft of writing. My debut Wordplay: A Potion Named Poetry was an introduction into the world of words. My second book, Gumbo: Potent Poetry And Parables was the jewel that solidified my seat amongst other authors. Now back with Satan, You Can’t Have My Marriage, I plan to make my mark in the world of writing. Inspired by the likes of Langston Hughes, Toni Morrison and Jill Scott, I am embarking upon a journey to solidify my name as a writer. I have been blessed with the opportunity to have been previously published in Stars in Our Hearts: Findings in 2012 and recently in Poet Speak Magazine as the grand prize winning featured poet. I am also a prominent member of the Columbia’s Writer’s Alliance

Give us a summary of your book!

A. Satan, You Can’t Have My Marriage is a storm within a storm. The main character, Ahlai, is a forty year old something who seems to have it all, but that’s only on the outside looking in. Married to Adam, her successful husband of twenty years and high school sweetheart, Ahlai seems to possess the perfect life. Or does she? Perfect is an understatement. There is something that she longs for, however, it appears to be unattainable. This longing for this particular desire ultimately places her marriage in serious jeopardy. Her faith will be tested in ways she could never imagine. Relocating to her husband’s hometown seems to be the right decision, however, it will infinitely open Pandora’s Box. Family secrets, lies, sex, adultery, mystery, spirituality and suspense all come together like gumbo to make the perfect recipe for disaster. This wounding road of relentless restlessness will force Ahlai and her unbelieving husband to find their way back to God in a way that’s unexpected. Will their marriage be able to withstand the plight of pain and pleasure they’re about to encounter? The answer is delicately embedded in between these pages. Prepare yourself for this tantalizing twilight tale about spiritual attacks, magic and the test of one’s faith. This is a cautionary warning of how when you play with the devil, you will get burned. Sometimes, old shadows from the past come back to haunt. Fasten your seatbelts for this wild ride.

Q. What inspired you to write this book?

A. I have always been a fan of poetry and storytelling. Therefore, I was inspired and encouraged to write something unexpected from what’s the norm in the storytelling community. Ultimately, I receive ideas and inspiration from God. This is a story that needs to be told, of how when you don’t wit on God, the devil takes the wheel. Ahlai, who is the main character, will learn that the hard way, unfortunately. I wanted this book to touch people in a way they’ve never been touched before. This is a sample of my gift and artistic ability. Unlike my first two books which were poetry books, I wanted to spark the reader’s attention even more. This is a book that speaks through various points of views and is ended with an unexpected twist.

If you could pick one song to describe this book, what would it be?

A. “Get Your House In Order” by Dottie Peoples.
