In The Spotlight Today: Rachelle Danielle!

How old are you and where are you from?

Rachelle: I am 32 years old and I’m from Goldsboro, North Carolina.

How old were you when you realized you wanted to be a writer?

Rachelle: I was 10 when I started writing, but it wasn’t until I was 16 that I really decided I wanted to become a writer.

Tell us more about your book! What inspired you to write it?

Rachelle: Still My Mommy chronicles the life of a child who finds out her mother is a drug addict. It deals with everything from single motherhood to mother-daughter issues. From self-esteem issues and hopelessness to substance abuse issues and suicide. Although I decided to tell it from a fictional point of view, it is very much based on my life and struggles. I’m sharing this story in hopes of showing someone else that may be dealing with what I dealt with, that they don’t have to fall victim to their circumstances. I grew up in the age of “What happens in this house, stays in this house.” Which, in my opinion, breed a generation of hurting adults. A generation full of people unsure how to process the feelings and the pain they were supposed to leave “in the house.” Writing this book gave me the opportunity to really heal from the pain of my mom’s addiction while speaking on a subject that many children and families have dealt with.

If you could relate to any character in your book, who would it be and why?

Rachelle: As I stated earlier, the book is based on my life, so I most relate to the main character Kaitlin. Like Kaitlin, I spent a majority of my life wanted to be accepted by the woman that gave me life.

What type of books do you enjoy? What are two of your favorites?

Rachelle: I guess you could say I’m the true definition of a “bookworm” I really enjoy any type of book with a great story line. Lately I’ve found myself reading more biographies. Two of my favorite books are “I know why the caged bird sings” by Dr. Maya Angelou and “The Hate You Give” by Angie Thomas. “Oh the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss would have to be an honorable mention. I know it’s a child’s book but the message resonates no matter what age you are.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy doing during your free time? Do you have any other businesses?

Rachelle: I enjoy going to church, traveling and spending time with my friends. My free time is limited, so I try to spend it making memories that last a life time.

If you could pick any song to describe your main character, what would it be?

Rachelle: Just one? Wow that’s tough... I guess it would have to be “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child.

Do you have any upcoming books in the works?

Rachelle: I don’t have any upcoming books as Still My Mommy was just released. However, my first novel called “Gut Feeling” was released in 2016. Though it’s nothing like Still My Mommy I still has an overall message of survival and growth.

Do you have any book specials/giveaways or events coming up?

Rachelle: I just had a Mother’s Day giveaway where I gave $100 to 4 mothers for sharing embarrassing stories about their mother’s on social media. I also have book signings scheduled at the LaGrange NC library on Saturday, August 25th from 1-3pm
