In The Spotlight Today: Holly Bargo!

How old are you and where are you from?

I’m 52 years old and live in southwest Ohio. My co-author Russ Towne is a wee bit older and lives in California.

Tell us more about your book!

Six Shots Each Gun is a compilation of short and not-so-short stories set in the latter half of 19th century America. It came about after I complained to Russ that my tour de force, The Falcon of Imenotash, couldn’t find a readership. Russ bought a copy and said he was blown away by the story. Afterward, he invited me to collaborate with him on a collection of short stories. We talked it out and agreed to each contribute six stories (the “six shots” with each author being a “gun”). We thought up a variety of plots and chose some of our stories from them.

Each of the stories is set in the Old West in the days of cowboys and cattle barons. Russ’ stories are consistent with the genre, although he’s great at adding surprising little twists that readers never see coming. Events and action drive his stories. Coming from a romance background, I focus more on the characters and the relationships between them. Therefore, my stories have character-driven plots. It’s a great mix. Of course, we have the requisite gunslingers, wealthy ranchers, cowboys, outlaws, and not-so-weak damsels in distress.

We both had fun with this project. If Russ ever asks me to collaborate with him, I’ll jump at the chance.

What does your ideal writing space look like?

My ideal writing space isn’t crowded. I’m good with a comfortable chair and desktop or laptop computer. What I need is quiet, perhaps some music of my choice playing in the background. I often write with music. I need warmth, too. I don’t work well when chilled.

If your book was turned into a movie, who would play your main characters?

If we go with the first story, “Heart of Gold,” I can see a (much) younger Kevin Costner playing the hero, Mars Drummond, and a young Julia Ormond or Anne Hathaway playing the heroine, Penelope Mays.

You’re stranded on an island, and only one character from any book can save you. Who are you picking?

Uberon from Daughter of the Dark Moon. There’s not much the Unseelie king can’t do. He makes me swoon.

Besides being a writer, what else do you enjoy?

I read. I read a lot. I also enjoy horseback riding, although I don’t do as much as I’d like to or should, considering that I own three horses.
